Whether it’s because you’re going back to school, working from home, or you just want to get one, getting a new laptop can be exciting but quite stressful too. There’s a laptop for every budget and need, and buying just one can feel like a challenge.
Today, we will be looking at one laptop, the Lenovo Flex 14. This is also known as the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14. In this review, we’ll take a deep dive into it and allow you to decide if the Flex 14 Lenovo is right for you. Without further ado, let’s look at it.
What’s So Good about the Lenovo Flex 14s?
Lenovo is a Chinese computer technology company that has been around since the 1980s, and has acquired quite a few brands in its nearly 40 years of existence.
One of their laptop lineups is the Flex, a 2-in-1 laptop. In case you don’t know what that is, it’s a device that combines the traditional laptop and a tablet. When it opens up, it’s a traditional laptop with a keyboard, which is good if you need to be productive. In laptop mode, it comes with a touchscreen, but you’re probably going to be using the built-in keyboard and mouse.
This laptop can fold into a reverse direction, and there, it enters tablet mode. Here, it’s flat and can be used like an iPad or another tablet.
With a 2-in-1, you can also fold it into a stand, which is great if you’re watching a movie or reading a book.
There are many brands that offer these laptops. They’ve been around in some fashion as early as 1993, but it wasn’t until the 2010s when they started getting mainstream attention. Nowadays, you can find them for a mid-range price.
Overall, Lenovo is a reputable computer brand that has nearly 40 years of experience in the field. If you are looking for a mid-range computer, Lenovo products may be what you are looking for.
The Lenovo Flex 14
Now, let’s talk a bit about the Lenovo Flex 14. This is a laptop that is lightweight and is packed with various features, including the ability to be as private as possible when doing work, something important in today’s work from anywhere world. There are several reasons why this laptop stands out, so let’s take a look at them.
Important Feature #1: Decent Battery Life and Rapid Charging Technology
One of the most important parts of a laptop is the battery life. When you’re working from anywhere, you don’t want your laptop to run low, do you? With the Lenovo Flex 14, you can get up to 8 hours of battery life. Of course, energy settings and other factors can alter that, sacrificing performance for energy saving, but if you can get the maximum amount of juice out of a single charge, that’s an entire workday.
Another feature it has is rapid charging technology. If you have a 65-watt adapter, you can charge the laptop up to 80 percent in 60 minutes. If you forgot to charge your laptop last night and you’re in a rush to leave your home, this can keep your laptop going for a while.
We should probably mention that the 2-in-1 laptop doesn’t quite have the same amount of juice as a traditional tablet, which can get up to 12 hours depending on which model you can get. Of course, you may not get the same productivity with a tablet, especially if you are a writer. However, if you are an artist and you’re stuck on a 12-hour flight with no way to charge your tablet, maybe the traditional tablet is the way to go.
Important Feature #2: TrueBlock Privacy Shutter
Having a webcam built into your laptop is convenient, especially if you’re always in Zoom meetings. However, many people have privacy issues with those things. Chances are, you have seen a businessperson whose laptop webcam had a piece of tape over it. Even Mark Zuckerberg, the person who supposedly collects everyone’s data, has a piece of tape over his laptop’s camera.
With this laptop, there is no need to get the tape out. This webcam has a shutter that you can close when you’re not using it, giving you some peace of mind without an ugly piece of tape.
When people cover their laptops, they typically do so because they are afraid of the government spying on them. While an FBI agent looking at your questionable search history is one concern, another concern you should have is a hacker possibly gaining access to your webcam. Besides having good security, covering your laptop’s webcam can be a wise move.
We should probably mention that anyone can be hacked. Even if you’re not rich or you don’t have access to anything interesting, a hacker can still be interested in what you have or want what little money you own. In fact, some go after smaller people because they have fewer security measures.
Important Feature #3: The 2-in-1 Mode
As mentioned, this is a 2-in-1, meaning you can fold the laptop into a tablet, or fold it into a stand if you want to watch some Netflix. Many laptops have this feature, but the Lenovo Flex 14 offers an interesting add-on, the ActivePen.
This is a pen you can use on your touchscreen. This is good if you want to hand-write some notes, or if you’re an artist and need the best tools for the job.
What makes this appealing is the ability to have it all without buying more. You don’t need to have both a tablet and a laptop. You can have both with a simple fold. While a traditional tablet does have battery life that’s better and it can be lighter, the 2-in-1 offers the performance of a laptop.
Important Feature #4: The Specs
Of course, what laptop deep-dive isn’t complete without some specs? Every computer geek wants to see the specs before purchase, so we are going to list them right now.
The Lenovo Flex 14 comes with an Intel Core Pentium Gold 5405U Processor, which has 2.30 GHz, 4 threads, 2 cores, and a cache of 2 MB. This Intel Core processor should be able to keep up with most work tasks, including video editing or other high-performance tasks.
Some versions, such as the Lenovo Flex 6, may use a different processor. The Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14 version, in particular, uses the AMD Ryzen 5. The AMD Ryzen 5 is a powerful processor for gamers, and if you’re on the search for a budget gaming laptop, the AMD Ryzen 5 of the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14 could be something to consider for the price.
Some Lenovos have the Core i7 processor, which is a microprocessor. Others use the Core i5.
The Lenovo Flex 14 uses Windows 10 Home in S Mode. Chances are, you’re familiar with Windows 10, but what is S Mode? This is a streamlined version of Windows that makes your laptop more secure, stable, and faster. However, you can only add apps approved by the Windows Store, and Edge is your only browser. If this doesn’t sound appealing, you can switch out of S Mode to the full version, but you can’t switch back.
The Lenovo Flex 14 comes with a full HD display that’s touchscreen, with a brightness of 220 nits. If you are unsure what that means, nits measure the brightness. For some people, this is a little underpowered in regards to brightness.
The 14 in Flex 14 comes from its 14-inch display. For most people, this is a good size display.
The Lenovo Flex 14 comes with 4GB of RAM. Some units may have 8 GBs. You can get up to 16GB with this type of laptop.
The battery of the Lenovo Flex 14 is a 4-Cell Li-Ion 45 Wh. It has up to 8 hours of life and can be rapidly charged with a 65-watt adapter. Some laptops include that, and others you have to buy separately.
The Lenovo Flex 14 has a 128GB solid state drive. Others may have a 256GB SSD. This doesn’t seem like too much, but when you use the laptop for working, most of your files may be in the cloud, anyway. A solid state drive has good performance, but one sacrifice is that you may not get as many GB as opposed to a hard disk drive.
Weight and Dimensions
This is a portable, lightweight 2-in-1, having a weight that is 3.65 lbs. and dimensions of 12.9″ x 9.0″ x 0.7″. Some people say it’s too heavy, but if that weight isn’t bad for you, you may think otherwise.
It has a 720p webcam with a shutter lock to protect your privacy.
In addition, it comes with other features you may expect. It has an SD card reader, Wi-Fi, two USB ports, an audio jack, and a fingerprint reader on some models. The fingerprint reader is a great way to keep your computer locked up without needing a password. However, some people may prefer just a password or PIN for their security needs.
So overall, the Lenovo Flex 14 2-in-1 is a mid-range laptop that has a great deal of high-performance features in it. Note that these specs may differ depending on which model you get. Some have more RAM or more storage. Always read the specs beforehand in order to be sure that you’re getting the right type of laptop for what you need.
Can Do/Can’t Do
- This laptop is good for most work tasks. Whether you’re writing, entering data, drawing, or doing some light video editing, this laptop should be fine for that.
- This laptop is also good for casual entertainment. From streaming video to tablet time, this 2-in-1 works well for both. It may be good for low-performance video games, too.
- It can give you a work day’s worth of decent performance thanks to its 8 hours of battery life.
- While it has decent performance, it may not be good for some heavy-duty tasks. It probably won’t be able to play the latest AAA video game, even on low settings.
- The battery life is decent, but a 2-in1 laptop doesn’t last as long as a traditional tablet.
How Do You Use It?
It’s just like any other laptop, where you plug it in, turn it on, and set it up according to what you need. However, we are going to give you some instructions on some of its unique features.
The 2-in-1 Mode
Switching from laptop to tablet mode is a cinch. When you have it opened like an ordinary laptop, continue folding the display away from the keyboard. With an ordinary laptop, doing this may damage the laptop. However, a 2-in-1 is designed to fold all the way in the other direction. Once you do this, the interface will change to tablet mode, which optimizes the laptop for touchscreen. You can also turn off the automatic switch from laptop to tablet mode.
The Laptop Webcam Shutter
Simply slide the shutter to close the laptop’s webcam. It’s as simple as that.
Read the Manual
With any laptop, it’s important to read the manual or watch some tutorials in order to get the most out of it depending on what you need it for. Don’t be afraid to spend a couple hours getting to know your laptop.
What Do the Reviews Say?
Now, let’s see what the reviews say. When picking a laptop, the customer reviews are always important, and the review score should be overall positive.
Depending on which model you get, you’re going to find different reviews, but overall, most people love this laptop, and it tends to get an overall review score of around 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.
This laptop is mid-range, which means it usually goes in the $500-$700 price range. For that price, many reviewers say it is a powerful 2-in-1 laptop with plenty of performance to go along. People say it’s well worth the price if you’re looking for a good laptop on a decent budget. The Lenovo Flex 14 is also a durable little laptop and easily portable, too.
Of course, not all reviewers were happy. With a tech review, most negative experiences center around people who got duds in the mail – laptops that were dead on arrival, or had problems on arrival. One reviewer had problems with their webcam on arrival and had difficulty reaching customer support.
Mixed reviews talk about the owner’s who love the performance and battery life, but say the brightness and audio isn’t good enough. Another problem is apparently its Wi-Fi, which kept dropping the signal.
With that said, the overall score of these laptops is still positive. Most people say the Lenovo Flex 14 inch 2-in-1 is a great little laptop with some unbeatable performance.
How Does It Compare?
Of course, when you need a new laptop, you’re probably not going to settle on the first one you see. That’s why we’re here to compare the Lenovo Flex 14-inch with some other laptops.
Lenovo Flex 14 vs Dell Inspiron 14 5000
Dell is a decent brand to check out if you need a mid-range laptop, and their Inspiron 14 lineup is a 2-in-1, just like the Lenovo Flex 14-inch. Honestly, they are more or less the same spec-wise. They have the same Intel core processor, same RAM, and similar performance. The Lenovo Flex 14 does offer some unique features like the shutter control, but besides that, they are quite similar. Reviews are similar as well.
Lenovo Flex 14 vs HP Pavilion X360
This 2-in-1 laptop from HP also has similarities to the Lenovo Flex 14, but they do differ slightly. Graphics in the HP Pavillion are a little bit better, and it is lighter. The Flex has more memory, however. The price and storage can depend on where you get it from, but the Pavilion usually beats it out.
Is Lenovo Flex 14 Good?
Many people, especially in the computer world, may have a different definition of what “Good” means. However, if you’re looking for a medium-range laptop that’s 2-in-1, this one delivers.
If you’re unsure, let’s list the good with the bad.
The Lenovo Flex 14 has good performance, being able to play video and perform most tasks with ease. While it may not be the most heavy duty laptop out there, there’s still a lot to like performance wise.
The price is also good. It can depend on where you get it, but in general, it’s a good value, being around the $600 range.
It has a privacy shutter for the webcam, giving you some peace of mind whenever you are on the go and don’t want someone watching you unless you want to have a Zoom meeting.
Its chassis is soft, but durable.
Besides that, it comes with everything you want from a laptop, from USB ports to an SD card reader.
The display may be a bit dim for some, especially if you’re working or web browsing in a darker room.
Some people find the Lenovo Flex to be a bit heavy.
While it’s a minority of people, some people end up getting lemons, and they have problems with customer service.
Overall, this is a good laptop for general use. If you want a mid-range laptop and tablet rolled into one, you can’t go wrong here. Check it out and see if it’s worth it for you and your situation.
Is the Lenovo Flex 14 Good for Gaming?
It depends on what gaming you’re using it for, but a mid-range laptop is usually not ideal if you want the best performance in gaming. For example, if you have to set the graphics on the highest settings, want the best frame rate, and you want to have a fat hard drive to store all the games on, you may want to invest in a $1,000+ laptop meant for gaming or build your own.
However, the Flex 14 may be good for low-settings gaming or playing some old or indie titles that are far less demanding. In your search for a good gaming laptop, you may want to search a little more if you want the best of the best. However, if you want a decent work laptop that can play some light gaming and play some video, this is good for the price.
When Did the Lenovo Flex 14 Come Out?
This Lenovo machine came out in July of 2019, and it’s still a great laptop a year later.
And there we go. This was the breakdown of the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14. If you are still unsure or were multitasking when we did our review of the Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14, we will summarize the points again.
The Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14 is good if you want a 2-in-1 laptop that has good specs for a mid-range. It can do most of your tasks and web browsing with ease, and can do a little gaming. Many units also come with some with some advanced features, such as a fingerprint reader. It even has a shutter control for privacy.
The Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14 also comes with a pen, meaning that it’s good if you are an artist. In addition, if you get one with an AMD Ryzen, Core i7 or i5, or another powerful processor, it will be better for gaming.
With that said, if you want a more advanced laptop, you should spend a little more. For example, Alienware is good if you’re looking for an expensive gaming laptop.
Otherwise, most 2-in-1 laptops of this price work well, and they can be just what you’re looking for.
Picking a laptop is a hard decision, and it can be a long search. You’ll spend quite a bit of time web browsing and reading review after review. There is no right laptop to pick, but just be mindful of the specs and see if it’s for you. We do believe the Lenovo Flex 6, Lenovo Ideapad Flex 14, or any of the other laptops in this lineup are good. However, there could be something that is better for your situation.
We will conclude this LF 14 review by saying that when you purchase a laptop, you should search for a reputable seller and make sure it has a good warranty.
Ordering from Amazon is good because if there’s a problem or you’re not satisfied with the laptop, you can return it within 30 days. However, you do want to be sure your laptop has a warranty in case something happens to it. You don’t want a machine that fails within the first few months, and you can’t do anything about it afterward.
And there you have it. We do believe the Lenovo Flex 14 is a good choice if you’re looking for a budget 2-in-1. We hope you’ll find the best laptop for your needs. Good luck.
